As featured on ESPN MLB, Alex Rodriguez is going down for shooting up. Unlike his fellow user, Ryan Braun, he has not cut a deal. Instead, he has bad mouthed major league baseball, darkly suggested that it is a media plot and has tried to obfuscate the situation. For this he needs three law firms? I would suggest that he is not following the advise of his counselors, and that he comes under the heading of an uncontrollable client. I am sure his attorneys are getting paid, but trust me, it does not feel good to represent someone who does not follow your advise. He has already promised to appeal.
First, generally negotiations should be in private. Second, if you go public, have something to hang your hat on. Third, assess what you have to win and lose. Fourth, generally dissing the other party when it has both investigative and adjudicative powers is not a good idea. I am certainly not the first to note that this guy has made a ton of money, but learned nothing off the field. Ugh.
